Dancing In The Age Of AI
Hi folks, Callum Brazzo here from Diamondz, posing the question: What does dancing in the age of AI look like?
As someone who holds creativity dear to his heart and central to his being, the idea of using AI to replace that...doesn't appeal to me. But notice how I highlighted the word, replace? That's because I do believe utilising AI or Artificial Intelligence to enhance certain aspects of the dancing world could be useful. Particularly focusing on the more formal requirements of running a class such as attendance and payment systems as well as tracking statistics, AI can be a beneficial tool.
But does AI effect the overall teaching and student experiences?
If, for example, Covid-like circumstances occurred again and we had to rely on technology to communicate and AI representation of our founder Abbi could be created to keep classes running, especially if Abbi herself or the admittedly unlikely situation of all teachers falling ill, wouldn't AI serve a purpose then?
But you'd just cancel the classes, wouldn't you? Because human connection is essential even if you can reap the same benefits from a class without a human being present (if AI gave you choreography to make you sweat, your body would still react and a level of focus would still be necessary) however that lack of humanity would probably not endear students or parents towards classes. Perhaps some students, speaking on my own autistic experiences, may struggle with eye contact in classes so an AI substitute may prove to have different, potentially positive results, no?
This is in theory though, the facts of the matter as we experience them at Diamondz are that human connection can not be replaced but there is scope to integrate technology into things.
Events could be enhanced with AI videos to save on the human time that goes into promoting and sustaining a community (more on the practical side in the following column you might have missed: https://www.diamondzdance.com/post/the-cost-of-community
This is only the beginning of a much larger conversation within the arts...but at

least we're starting it.
QUESTION TIME:
Can you think of any pros/cons of AI and technology as whole in the world of dance?
Until next month, check out these blogs in the meantime!
